“You won’t mention this to anyone, will you?”

Harry turned to look at Lottie as he pulled out of the electric gates. His cheeks were flushed and he looked genuinely happy. Lottie thought for a minute. She knew it would cause carnage if anyone knew. And she liked Felix. If Harry rode the horse, she could see Felix regularly.

“No,” she decided, and then had a brainwave, seeing the opportunity. “If you don’t say anything about me riding Patch. Because I am, you know. With Granny.”

Harry nodded.

“I guessed you might be. OK, deal,” he grinned. “Anyway, Mum and Dad are too wrapped up in their jobs to notice much. We can ride our horses to our hearts’ content.”

And just for a second, he was back to old Harry, the one who would lead her round and round on a pony at Wild Hill.
